Scientist warns of major global crisis by 2030 – 19 March 09
One of Britain’s leading scientists is warning that the growth of the world’s population will reach crisis point by the year 2030.
John Beddington, the UK government’s chief scientific adviser, says food and water supplies will come under severe pressure as the Earth’s population swells to 8.5 billion people.
He says the answer is in embracing new agricultural technology.

Greek PM in Berlin for debt talks
Greece has witnessed its most serious unrest over its economic crisis, as the country’s parliament passed an austerity package to help tackle the government’s huge debts.
The clashes in Athens broke out as George Papandreou, the Greek prime minister, visited Berlin and held talks with Angela Merkel, the German prime minister.

Greece’s brief holiday from economic troubles
The eurozone nations have given Greece 30 days to show that they are serious about making big cuts in the their government finances.
They fear the country’s massive debts could spread further if the damage is not contained.
But for ordinary Greeks it will mean further pain, in the form of lower wages and higher taxes.
